The Pageland Chamber of Commerce welcomes another new member. Mercy in Me Free Medical Clinic is a non-profit Corporation located at 32 Foundry Hill Road in Cheraw, SC. The clinic first opened its doors in September of 2009.

Volunteer Kappie Griggs also serves as Secretary for the corporation. She sat down with us to explain how the clinic works. “We are a free medical clinic. We offer routine medical care for patients who live in Chesterfield County, are over 18 years of age, are uninsured, and have a household income within 200% of the Federal poverty level.”

“All of our services are free to patients who qualify for our clinic. We survive on donations and non-government grants. In 2011, we had 437 patient visits!” Ms. Griggs continued, “all of our staff are volunteers. We have four doctors, six nurses, six screeners, other medical staff, office staff and cleaning personnel.”

The clinic has two major fund raisers each year. They host a Banquet in late spring and a Walkathon in the fall. Their website is: www.mercyinme.org and it is a great source of information about the clinic. On that website, you can find information on volunteering, making donations, qualifying for medical care and how to find their office. You can also contact them by phone at 843.537.5288.

Mt. Croghan History Book a Huge Success

Longtime friends and residents of the Mt. Croghan community in Chesterfield County, Clara R. Hendrick and Jean N. Rushing, have documented the history of the place where they grew up, raised families, and called home for so long. After seven years of researching census records, State House documents, monuments, and obtaining oral histories by interviewing community members, their hard work has culminated into a 447 page, hardback publication titled, “Mt. Croghan, South Carolina: A History of Our Town and Surrounding Areas.” A real treasure for those originating from the region or those interested in learning more about South Carolina’s rich history. The work lists Mt. Croghan High School graduates and teachers, other schools, over 400 photographs (some dating back to the early 1800s), and the area’s families, churches, and businesses. A “Map of the Past” shows the location of the town’s businesses and home-places at the turn of the century. The first printing of 300 sold out in 2 weeks. Due to the increased interest and request a 2nd printing will be available Nov. 16, 2011. Books are $30.00, to order add $5.00 for S. & H. Mail to: Mt. Croghan History Book, P. O. Box 44, Mt. Croghan, SC 29727. Make checks payable to Mt. Croghan History Book. For additional information contact Clara R. Hendrick 843 407-4028 or Jean N. Rushing 843 634-6447.

Come have some fun with us! Our 16th Annual Golf Tournament will be Thursday, October 13th. We kick off the event with registration and brunch at 11 am. Teams of four will begin shotgun tee offs at noon. Game time will be followed by supper in the club house and the awards ceremony. We will have prize drawings too!

Oh yes, this year we’ve added more fun with a “Golf Ball Drop”. You could be the lucky winner of a 50/50 fundraiser. Purchase two golf balls for $5 or five golf balls for $10 – you will be assigned a special number and it is placed on the golf balls your purchase. After the tournament, we will drop the balls from a bucket truck onto a target below – the lucky person to be on the target (or closest) winns 50% of the pot. You don’t have to be present to win, you don’t even have to be participating in the golf tournament. Our Board of Directors will be selling tickets around town for this event.

Steve Kirchin is our volunteer and event coordinator for the Golf Tournament. Steve has several years experience with planning and executing this tournament, so you can count on a smooth start to finish. “This is one of the best fund raisers for the Chamber of Commerce. We have a good time and do a good thing for our community.” Kirchin commented lately. Funds from the event help with expenses for other free events offered by the Chamber.

There are many ways to participate in this event. Sponsorships range from full tournament sponsors to hole sponsors and many levels in between. Door prizes and golfer goody bags items are also needed. Most important, we need teams! If you would like more information, call the Chamber office at 672-6400, or download the registration form here to participate. Golf Tournament Brochure 2011

The Chamber of Commerce is celebrating Black History Month in February. We are featuring several business owners and leaders that have made a difference in our community. Each week we submitted articles to the local news media for publishing and we added them to this post. We hope you enjoy getting to know these people through these interviews and also in their businesses and positions throughout our community.

Martha Hamilton, Pageland Town Councilwoman

Martha Wadsworth Hamilton was born right here in Pageland. She was raised in our community and schools until she relocated to New York in the 9th grade. She graduated from Walton High School and lived with her older sister while there. After working about a year, she decided to move back south to her home. Martha attended Friendship Junior College in Rockhill for two years.

Martha’s younger sister Evelyn needed to have open heart surgery and was only 18 years old. When she recovered and wanted to go on to college herself, Martha feared that her parents would not financially be able to send both girls on to school. Believing it was necessary for Evelyn to further her education, Martha went to work instead. One of her first jobs was in the library at Petersburg school, then she went to work at South Carolina Electric. “I probably would have been there for a lot of years, working 2nd shift, but my family situation changed. My mom died and she and dad were raising a foster child. Back then, the foster system wouldn’t let a single parent household keep a child. Moses and I decided to take over the care. David was 7 at the time.” She went to work with Monroe Hospital as a ward secretary so that she could work first shift – as foster care mandated, then landed a job with the Chesterfield County offices for S. C. Probation, Parole and Pardon Services. She was on the Executive Board for South Carolina there and retired after 28 years of service.

For the last ten years, Martha and Moses Hamilton have owned M & M Leisure Travel and they specialize in Group Cruises and other types of trips. They own a charter bus that is available for churches, schools, and families to take on dream vacations and get-a-ways. Moses does the driving and they always have a lot of fun. Martha and Moses met back in 1969 when she and brother Eustus Wadsworth owned an entertainment business. Moses Hamilton had a band and the rest is history.

Hamilton is the daughter of Harry and Cate Wadsworth and was raised with four sisters and three brothers. So, she knows about team work. “Being able to work as a team is the only way the accomplish task. That’s what it took for us to have a Community Center and I’m so glad I was on the Town Council when it was planned and also to see it become a reality. We have done so many good things during the time that I have been on the Council (since 1992). There has been a lot of growth, especially on the bypass but also with industry and their expansions. Now, I hope to see the Lynches River Electric agreement materialize.”

Martha attributes her success in life and work to Dorothy Arnold. “She instilled in me the importance of education and treated me like a daughter, especially after my mother died. “ Hamilton has served on various boards of 2nd Presbyterian Church, where she is currently the Clerk of Session. She has held several titles with Daughters of Isis, Pageland NAACP Branch, the State Employees Association and the Booker T. Washington Assembly #226. She was awarded Woman of the Year by the Pageland Chamber of Commerce in 1999. She has received numerous awards and recognition from the local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Probation Parole and Pardon Pee Dee Region, Chesterfield County Administrative Staff, 25 years of service to SC Desert Conference, and the SC State Employees Association. She has proudly served her district with three mayors: Kirk, Faile and presently Hough.

Jimmy Baker, Pageland Town Councilman

Jimmy Baker has been a lifelong resident of Pageland. Born and raised in the White Plains Church community, the family share cropped with the Arant family, then moved to the Petersburg area when he was 14 years old. He has lived in that area since. A son of the late Jessie and Dennis Baker, he grew up with three sisters. He attributes his outlook on life to values instilled in him by his immediate family and to some special people in his youth. “Principal Alvin Arnold and his wife (my teacher) Dorothy treated me like one of their very own, my first grade teacher Ms. Nichols and my aunts always watched out for me. Also Coach Willie “Bill” Smith was my basketball coach and mentor. I also feel that my previous pastor – Rev. Vernon Evans (for 34 years) provided me with important life values. Rev. Dianna Charles continues to inspire me today.” Baker commented.

While in high school , Baker enjoyed playing basketball and his team went on to win 2 years in the championship game. In the summer, Baker held a part time job at the hospital in Monroe and was the first black employee at Peoples Department Store in Monroe and Charlotte. During the school year, he drove a school bus. “I was one of the lucky ones to have a brand new Chevy school bus!” Baker graduated from Petersburg High School in 1962 and began his adult years working out of town, but never moving from Pageland. He was a supervisor at General Latex and Johnson Motor Lines. He came back to Pageland for a few years at the Carmel Manufacturing Company, but retired from Teledyne Allvac after 23 years as a certified finishing inspector and trainer for new employees.

In 1994, Councilman J.D. McManus’ death while in office left a 2 year term to be filled. Neighbors and friends encouraged Baker to run for the seat. He won and has been an active councilman for the Town of Pageland continuously for the last 16 years. He takes pride in attending council meetings and municipal Association meetings for the town where he has learned a lot about procedures, grants and finances for small towns. He completed 24 hours of formal instructions necessary to meet a milestone with the South Carolina Municipal Association. “Martha Hamilton, Mayor Carol Faile and I enjoyed these classes and it is important to keep updated on things.”

Over the years, Baker has seen a lot of growth in Pageland, particularly on the bypass. He speaks fondly of business like Conbraco and Tucker Lumber which have expanded during his years of service. He has also enjoyed seeing the success many African Americans during that time. “I’m proud of businessmen like Jackie Blackwell. Also, I was really excited about the Heritage Festival held last year by Ronald Gaines and a host of others from our community. It was a week of excitement that went on without any bumps in the road.” He is also proud of The Pageland Community Center and the Clyburn Center.

Baker enjoys singing in a Gospel Choir, attending Rock Hill AME Zion church where he became a trustee in 1976. He has served as chairman of the trustee board and a class leader. He also enjoys time with his family. He has three children – daughters Marcia and Jeannine and a son, Reggie. He and his wife Mary have been married 43 years. Mary has been employed with Conbraco Industries for 35 years and works part time at the Sutton House for those with disabilities.

Baker’s lifelong motto is “Love-Learn-Live; and try to live what you learn in life”. He tries to uphold his position in the community by helping others. “Mayor Faile used to say we need to be faithful, friendly and fair to everyone and I try to do that. We have great employees working for the town that make our job much easier. The one thing I would like to see is more people taking part in our meetings and other events. Mrs. Dorothy Arnold came to every meeting, as long as she was able. She set an example for others. One thing I know, without a shadow of doubt, if we work together as one, we will see growth in Pageland.”

Pageland Police Chief, Larry Brown

Chief Brown grew up in the Angelus Community of Jefferson, SC. He attended school in McBee until his junior year in high school. He graduated from Central High School and then began building upon the work values that he had be taught through family members. He worked at Caro-Knit in Jefferson for 5 years, “my family and my Caro-Knit family taught me a work ethic that I still strive to uphold today. I hold the department to those same values instilled in me though my early years.” From childhood, all he wanted to be was a police officer. He wanted to help people and enforce the laws.

Chief Brown’s career in law enforcement began as an employee with the Chesterfield County Detention Center under Sheriff Ralph Freeman. “Ricky Quick, a deputy at the time encouraged me to apply for a job with the department.” Then he began work as a patrol officer for the Town of Pageland under the late Chief Glen Funderburk. Shortly afterwards, he attended the Police Academy, returning to Pageland and has been employed by the town since. Brown worked under Chief Lundy Brigman and late Chief Johnny Sowell while moving through the ranks of Corporal, School Resource Officer, Detective and Assistant Chief of Police for the department. In 2010, Brown was named Chief by the Town of Pageland, becoming the first African American to serve in that position.

“Law enforcement is a never ending in the training aspect. New laws are made to enforce constantly, policies change and you have to earn credit hours every year through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.” He has a staff of 12 officers and four dispatchers full time and also six part time department employees and they all stay up on the current issues. “They are an excellent bunch of people to have on staff”, which make his favorite past time of traveling and spending time with his family more enjoyable.

Larry and his wife Janice have three children, daughters Yasmine and Aisha, and a son Isaiah. Brown is a member of Mt. Elon United Methodist Church, Chesterfield County Youth Coalition, Boys to Men Organization, Pee Dee Regional Work Investment Board, and a singer with several community gospel choirs. He holds Message in the Park yearly for the youth, which is a project he created and he has served as PTO President at Petersburg Elementary and advisor to SC Teen Institute at Central High.

Larry credits previous Pageland African American police officers who paved the way for him. Also Sheriff Freeman and the Police Chiefs that he worked for along with Sheriff Sam Parker, Trooper Butch Liles, Trooper Johnny Mitchell, Judge Faulkenberry and the late David Freeman, also his mother and father – Lenora Brown and the late Pink Brown. “So many helped me, but most of all, I give all the glory to God.” Brown concluded by saying “they all taught me to go the extra mile, everyone is important and deserves courtesy and respect. As public servants these people taught me to make myself available and to encourage other officers to do the same.”

S. Andre’ Singleton, Pageland Park and Recreation Director

Singleton is the Director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Pageland. He oversees the various recreational programs carried out for the Town of Pageland and its residents. Through this department, youth and adults enjoy participating in baseball, softball, basketball, football, volleyball and soccer. “There is always something to participate in – year around.” Singleton is responsible for the registration of players for the various sports, schedules, and games. There is also a Sports Camp held yearly to coordinate. He helps to keep the adult walkers active daily at the center, “they like to come up and walk for exercise and interact with each other. I enjoy their conversations.” He oversees all the events and the support staff it requires to pull everything off. This includes score keepers, concession workers, volunteer coaches and assistants.

Singleton depends on area businesses to support the teams through sponsorships. “Our businesses keep these kids busy with the sporting events and that keeps them focused. They have somewhere to go and something to do!” As director, Singleton is responsible for maintaining the National Dixie Youth and Dixie Girls programs and also State programs in basketball and football. He credits the coaches for helping to build the youth programs, especially Coach Joey Mangum.

He is a native of Columbia, South Carolina, graduating from Eau Clair High School in 1999. He is also a graduate of South Carolina State University with a bachelor degree in Physical Education and a minor in Physical Activity Management. After teaching history and activities at W.A. Perry Middle School in Columbia for eight years, he saw an ad for the recreation job in Pageland. It was just exactly what he wanted to do – it would get him outside the classroom and more attuned to his educational background. He has been with the town for about five years now. “I love working with people, I feel this department helps build our youth into the leaders of tomorrow. There are so many social skills at work when we play. The kids are learning various skills and they don’t even know it.”

Singleton is a member of Alpha phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. where he is the immediate past Corresponding Secretary for the chapter. He also is the Vice Chairman of the Deacon board of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Columbia and a member of the Midlands Baptist Association. Andre’ is also a member of the Chesterfield county Youth Development Coalition, the South Carolina Recreation Association and the NAACP.

When he isn’t planning the next season of events, Andre enjoys vacations and traveling, also attending concerts and comedy events. Most of all Andre enjoys meeting people!

Blackwell Trucking is a flatbed exclusive operation. They haul products like lumber and decking for C.M. Tucker Lumber to Lowes stores and they also transport lawn products for Old Castle out of Pageland.

Blackwell is a graduate of Petersburg High School. Prior to trucking, he was a turkey grower and farmer from 1977 – 1985. He managed over 80,000 turkeys for Jimco Farms while tending over 100,000 acres of soybeans, corn, watermelons and wheat. An allergy to turkeys and a depressed farming economy forced him to look at other options. With a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) in hand, he decided to try transportation. That was the start of Blackwell’s Trucking and what has been his passion for the last 25 years.

Blackwell is a member of Rocky Branch Church but attends Mt. Calvary regularly here in Pageland. He serves as Member-at-large on the board of trustees for Lynches River Electric Cooperative where he is Vice Chairman. He sits on the Audit Board for the Pageland Rescue Squad. He also speaks fondly of his work with AMI kids. This organization is based in Patrick and helps juveniles with a troubled life make a change. Their stay is around six months where they learn to make a difference in their community through their service and responsibilities.

Jackie is also the proud father of two grown children. His son Garrett works for Teledyne and daughter, Amanda is a dispatcher for the Pageland Police Department.

Blackwell is thankful for the opportunities he has been given. He encourages others and would like to help with advice to anyone who would like to strike out on their own – either as a owner/operator truck driver or business entrepreneur. Just stop by to see him.
