Everyone wants a “Healthy, confident, beautiful smile” and that is one thing Dr. John Murdock is proud to give. Dr. Murdock came to Pageland in July 2008 after Dr. Wayne Bauknight retired from his orthodontic practice in the town for 18 years. Dr. Charles Powell, Jr., a local dentist recognized the need for patients to have access to orthodontic treatment within the town. Dr. Powell invited Dr. Bauknight to practice in Pageland using his office at 1303 South Pearl Street. The venture proved to be a successful one and the orthodontic needs of the people of Pageland are now met in the convenience of their own town. Dr. Murdock has continued the tradition of excellence in orthodontic dentistry. Dr. Murdock is a member of many dental organizations including, American Association of Orthodontist, The Southern Association of Orthodontics, South Carolina Dental Association, and the American Dental Association.
Dr. Murdock was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina and played football for Lewisville High. His best high school memory was winning the state championship in 1996 when he played as a wide receiver. Always interested in the healthcare profession he began his pursuit of a degree in dentistry. He graduated from Morehouse College in 2001, University of North Carolina in 2005 and finished his Orthodontic training in 2008. During his second year of dental school, Dr. Murdock served on a mission trip to Mexico where he provided dental care to orphans. The program is an annual event sponsored by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Murdock said it was a wonderful experience that he will always cherish and would enjoy going back one day.
Being an orthodontist means always having young people around and that is just how the good doctor likes it. He says working with the younger generation helps keep him energized, “I love their energy.” He keeps abreast of not only the latest in orthodontics but technology, sports and movies. He recently viewed “Avatar” and came away with the affirmation that man needs to focus on the simple things in life and less on the material. Dr. Murdock enjoys working out and is currently using the P90X program and weight lifting. He likes hanging out with friends and keeping up with the Panthers and the Philadelphia Eagles. With his many interests, he has no problem keeping the conversation flowing and keeps even his youngest patients entertained and at ease during treatment.
Dr. Murdock’s love of technology translates into his treatment of patients. He stays on the cutting edge of the latest in orthodontic treatments and technology. He offers Invisalign Orthodontic treatment for those who wish to pursue that perfectly straight smile without traditional band and bracket braces. This option allows the patient to achieve a great smile with aligners that are removable. The treatment time is around 15 months. This is the perfect solution for many adults.
Dr. Murdock encourages parents to bring their children in for exams at age 7. At this age several permanent teeth have erupted and the child can be evaluated for the best treatment and optimal results. At this time, a Phase 1 treatment may be implemented to correct severe problems and to help with a child’s self esteem. A parent can call to make a screening appointment without a referral. The office accepts Care Credit, a line of credit for dental needs as well as Ortho/Banc, a service that allows a convenient automatic draft of your monthly payment.
Dr John Murdock believes that we should all treat others as we would want to be treated, that is evident. He also believes Philippians 4:13,”I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Dr. Murdock encourages young people to be diligent in their studies and work toward their goals. He says when situations arise that are difficult , stick with it and do your best. If a student is interested in orthodontics as a career, “Shadowing is a good way to help someone decide what type of career they would enjoy” and Dr. Murdock welcomes the Shadowing Program in his office.
